Proposing During Another Couple’s Wedding – Yay or Nay?

We’ve all heard or seen stories of a proposal happening at somebody else’s wedding.

Youtube, Facebook and Instagram are full of them – from ‘hell yeah, so cute’ to ‘absolutely NO chance’ we’ve seen it all.

So, it’s time to investigate whether proposing at someone else’s wedding is a romantic move or one that should be left for the movies…

❤️

PROS

Let’s start off with a positive angle. If the proposal has been pre arranged with the bride and groom then yes you can consider this their approval. It can be rather sweet, especially if the bride and groom are super close to the couple, like childhood best friends or brothers/sisters. It may be a moment that they want to share and remember together, forever.

If the bride and groom have a small intimate ceremony with just close family and friends, then it may be okay to propose (with permission) at the wedding. Chances are that they are also close with everyone at the ceremony anyway, leading to a little celebration before the spotlight goes straight back to the newlyweds.

This is the key ladies and gentleman. If you’re going to risk a proposal, as harsh as it sounds, try to keep it quick so the bride and groom don’t feel like you’re taking their limelight on their big day, and, so the guests don’t feel awkward, either.

Cons

It’s safe to say that most people are against proposing at someone else’s wedding. The majority of opinion argues that it intentionally steals away the limelight from the happy couple and this has some truth to it.

There have been countless stories where the celebrations have then in fact been made all about the newly engaged couple which is totally out of order. Especially since the bride and groom have organised and paid for everybody to celebrate their love.

Furthermore, when the bride and groom look back on their wedding antics they don’t want to be overwhelmed by memories of somebody else’s proposal.

Secondly, it takes away from the meaningfulness and significance of it all. The day is about two people taking a very big step forward together. It’s a pretty big stage in people’s lives and one might suggest the importance of this shouldn’t be watered down.

Thirdly, it can take away from the meaning of the proposal. A lot of people also argue that is a massive cop out on a thoughtful proposal, it’s not unique to the person being proposed to. In some cases they may actually feel awkward getting proposed to during someone else’s wedding. So if you’re going to do it make sure you have a semi clue on how your soon to be other half will react!

A lot of people also don’t realise that the bride and groom pretend to be happy when a couple propose at their wedding. A lot of couples force through a smile whilst low key seething. You really don’t want that passive tension.

To Conclude Folks

If you have permission then go for it, but make sure the bride and groom are 100% up for it, it’s a big decision for them too!

However, proposals should be special between the couple and should be everything from unique to completely and utterly romantic. Remember, this doesn’t have to be a grand gesture in front of crowds of people – it’s the little things that mean a lot.
